It’s my absolute favorite time of year. The days are getting cooler, the trees are changing color, and Halloween is right around the corner. For as long as I can remember, I’ve always loved Halloween. Now that I have a child, the occasion is that much more fun.

Unfortunately, my creative time is quite limited but I’ve been having fun making some festive pieces to celebrate the season!

Inspiration

Inspiration is a funny thing – it sort of pops out of nowhere at times and hits you. Other times, you go searching for it and end up empty handed.

I’ve been strolling through a few antique shops lately just for fun…and possibly inspiration.

I love old things, there is something appealing about the texture and feel of something that has been around for many, many, years. Books and chests are especially appealing to me – I have a hard time walking by an old chest without running my hands over it and peeking inside. I’m often left wondering what kind of treasures it used to hold or where it’s been.

I stumbled across some vintage postcards the other day and found inspiration there! They are old, floral, foil embossed, postcards from the early 1900′s. I like these for several reasons. Not the least of which is that they are old. Also, they are beautiful in their artwork – delicate foil embossing no doubt done by hand. They are also reminiscent of a time when people connected in a different way. Long before email and texting there was a way to connect that required some careful thought and your own handwriting. The postcards I find that have actually been mailed at some point are a bonus for me because they’ve traveled.

I’ve already made a few pieces of jewelry using these treasures and I plan to make plenty more.

I had a dream…

So, I had this dream. I know what you’re thinking…a lifelong dream of accomplishing some great feat. Something I had to work hard for and keep focused on, right?

Nope.

I’m talking about a run of the mill dream I had while slumbering. In this dream, I was creating incredible and unique jewelry. I woke up with the dream still etched on my brain and was consumed with this DRIVE to accomplish what I had in the dream.

There was only one problem…I had no idea how to make jewelry – none.

Fast forward a few months, and I’ve been experimenting and learning like crazy. One thing has become quite clear, I can’t stick to just one media to work in. The more I learn and try, the more media’s I want to work in.

So begins a new chapter…hope you come along for the ride.
